What to do when Facebook stops working?

As an author, it’s not always easy to reach your audience. I have written many articles about using social media, blogs, hashtags and contests, (one of these marketing books is free at the moment!)  but you constantly ask yourself the same question – how do I reach my target audience? This question is very specific to each author and the genre they write in, but for me, my books are primarily aimed at children, teens especially.

I firmly believe that Facebook is NOT effective in reaching young people anymore. It’s great if you’re looking for young to middle aged women who like romance/erotic novels, but if they’re not your target audience where do you go? Facebook is good to network with other authors for support, but the paying customer is more elusive.

Young people are still using social media, but in different formats. They like images and video that makes them laugh and can be shared with their friends. Instagram, Vine, and Pheed are the big social networks the youth is using, but these pose a problem when it comes to marketing – we deal in the written word, not artwork, images and video. Yes we have a book cover – ok, let’s share that. And yes, we probably have a book trailer – share that too. But, now what? Can we sustain enough images and video to keep an audience happy on these networks?

So, let’s have another think – kids like music. They listen to radio (but only the cool stations!) so why not try targeting there. There are loads of different radio stations looking for content. Many have programs or sections geared towards books, current trends, movies etc. Contact them and push yourself forward. Why is your book interesting for their listeners? Radio interviews are a step up from written blog interviews (which are also losing the impact they used to have). There is nothing more powerful than hearing someones voice and the passion they have for their work.

Anyway, I’ve been rambling! I’m giving radio interviews a try, and I’ll let you know how I get on and how effective it is. First one is next month.

Here’s the press release:

“British Author Tim Flanagan has decided to invade America with his very British style of writing. Tim, a native of Kent, will be appearing on one of the hottest underground radio shows in America.

Prague (I-Newswire) June 14, 2014 – The show, to be broadcast in July will showcase this British author at his very best.

Flanagan, fresh faced with success after his hit YouTube writing show with bestselling author MJ Summers, will face tough questions about writing, his books and English-isms from American broadcasters. This comes months after the British Prime Minister David Cameron appeared on The David Letterman Show and won American audiences over with humble rhetoric and a light-hearted sense of humor.

Flanagan was quoted as saying he was “delighted to be appearing in front of American audiences” and hopes his books go down as well with them as they have with English audiences. His “Moon Stealers” series has proven to be very popular with young adults across the UK and will be re-released with new covers for the American market this year…”
